Tarriers Gather for All-School Celebration at Charlie’s Picnic

Tacoma, Wash. – Charles Wright celebrated a long-running fall tradition on Friday, Sept. 23, inviting all enrolled families to campus for the annual Charlie’s Picnic (formerly Headmaster’s Picnic). The rainy weather held off, and hundreds of Tarriers flooded the Lower School Commons, outdoor playgrounds, grassy lawns, Middle School Commons, and athletic fields for carnival games, inflatable jungle gyms, and plenty of food.

Middle Schoolers hosted a carnival for Lower School students, with booths ranging from whack-a-mole to tricycle racing to giant Jenga to hair styling to face painting. The US girls soccer team defeated Annie Wright 8-1 and the football team won their game against Coupeville 23-20.

“Thank you, staff and volunteers, for all your help making Charlie’s Picnic a success,” says CWA Parent Association and Spirit Auction Coordinator Julie Ryan. “From setup to tear-down everything ran smoothly because of everyone’s hard work. It was fun seeing the smiles on all the Lower School kids’ faces while participating in all the creative activities the Middle School students offered. Having experienced this event for the first time, I can truly say it is a very special event having the whole school enjoy activities, sports, and yummy food together. I look forward to next year.”

Enjoy photos from the festivities below. Go Tarriers!

Class of 2019 Returns from Outdoor Education Trips

Charles Wright Academy’s Class of 2019 returned yesterday from their weeklong sophomore Outdoor Ed trips, during which they explored the wilderness of Washington state.

Prior to their departure, students studied how to pitch a tent, properly pack and fit a backpack, cooking in the outdoors, and practice teamwork. The sophomore class ventured into some of Washington’s most beautiful wilderness areas during the last week of September. Class members went backpacking in Olympic National Park, Olympic National Forest, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, or the Goat Rocks Wilderness. Another group went kayaking in the San Juan Islands. “We had great weather with sunny days,” says Upper School math teacher and Outdoor Ed program coordinator Katie Miller. “Students were able to enjoy lake swims and clear, beautiful nights that were perfect for stargazing. The groups saw a variety of wildlife, including marmots, mountain goats, and black bears.”

The students returned to campus with lots of stories (read one here), inside jokes, and some great memories. The Outdoor Education trips are a time for students to step outside of their comfort zone, make new friends, and slow down from the busy school schedule. Many students came home with a new love and appreciation for time spent outside. The Upper School Outdoor Club is hoping to offer numerous opportunities to get outside this year.

You can see photos from this year’s various trips here.

Middle and Upper Schools Complete 2016 Experiential Ed Week

Tacoma, Wash. – Charles Wright Academy’s Middle and Upper School students just wrapped up 2016’s Experiential Education Week. For four days in the fall, Upper Schoolers—and, for the first time this year, Middle Schoolers—take time off from regular classes to explore learning opportunities not traditionally amenable to the classroom.

Middle Schoolers went on field trips, attended workshops, and held a screening of Miss Representation. “The anecdotal feedback I’ve gotten from kids has been very positive,” says Middle School Head Rudy Ford. Upper School deans of students Annie Senner (ninth and 10th grades) and Laurel Webster (11th and 12th grades) share a short summary from each Upper School grade level.

Ninth Grade: Ninth graders were exposed to a wide variety of activities throughout the week. Whether experimenting with salsa dancing, art, meditation, or the Challenge Ropes Course at Camp Seymour, students pushed their limits, worked together, and bonded as a class. They researched some of the upcoming issues and candidates we will see in the November elections and even had the chance to hear George Elbaum, a Holocaust survivor, tell his story. The last day was devoted to wellness, with a presentation by a local nutritionist, a full 75-minute yoga class, and half a day with Robin Wallace-Wright learning about sexuality and sexual health (more below). The Class of 2020 should be proud of the way they engaged with new material and participated in each activity with enthusiasm.

Also, congratulations to the new ninth grade class representatives who were elected during Experiential Ed Week.

President: Hayden F.
Vice President: Jake W.
Community Service Representative: Ellen T.
SAC Representative: Ayana B.

10th Grade: The 10th graders hit the trails and the waterways to complete their Outdoor Education course! Outdoor Education is a five-day trip in the wilderness and is a graduation requirement for all Tarriers. Groups of teachers and students took trips to the Olympic National Park, the Goat Rocks Wilderness, and the San Juan Islands. Students learned to cook, camp, carry a pack, and take care of one another in the backcountry.

11th Grade: Eleventh graders spent two days touring the University of Puget Sound and the University of Washington campuses in order to better understand the differences between a small private college and a large public university. They also spent half a day working with their college counselors. Eleventh graders also spent one day working with a local group called Building Bridges, which aims to help students connect with each other and break down barriers. We were also happy once again to invite Robin Wallace-Wright to campus to teach a unit on sexual health and reproduction to both our ninth and 11th graders. Each grade level had individual time with Robin and focused on different topics. Robin is an experienced and certified sexual health educator who is also currently teaching at Eastside Prep and Overlake, among other schools. For more information about Robin, we encourage you to visit her website. Robin uses content from the FLASH curriculum, which is a comprehensive science-based sexual health curriculum.

12th Grade: Twelfth graders spent the majority of the week focusing on college admissions. Some seniors took advantage of the time to visit colleges and universities around the country, while others stay on campus to work with English teachers on their college essays and applications.

Outdoor Education: Five Days With the Bears

Madelyn Y. ’19 shares her experience on the 2016 sophomore Outdoor Education trip. You can read more about CWA’s 2016 Outdoor Ed trips here.

My experience of Outdoor Ed at Charles Wright consisted of long hikes full of laughter, freezing temperatures during night, and cozy campsites after a full day’s worth of hiking.

During the first few days, the hikes were increasingly difficult as most of them were uphill. The most challenging aspect was staying positive and mentally preparing for all of the obstacles we endured. I had to learn to push myself on the trail and take one step at a time until we reached our next stop. Thankfully, I had great teachers and peers to keep the moments lively as we tiredly carried our backpacks through the trek.

When we first made it to our campsites, it was so rewarding being able to spend the next few hours relaxing in the fresh air of the outdoors. When the nights became cold, I enjoyed having everyone in one tent to play games and keep warm. Mafia, dried food, and jokes/riddles became a huge aspect of our outdoor lives as we had to live without electronics for a week. During this time, I learned to appreciate the nature around me and focus more on what scary bugs might be near me rather than the latest gossip on the news. Overall, it was one of the most challenging but satisfying experiences of my life. It gave me a perspective on how everything from clean tap water to heating can be taken for granted. Honestly, until this trip, I never appreciated indoor plumbing and comfortable beds so much in my life!

CWA Hosts 2016 NWAIS Fall Educators Conference

Tacoma, Wash. – On Friday, October 14, the independent schools that make up the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) descended on the Charles Wright campus for the Fall Educators Conference, the accrediting organization’s annual professional development conference.

This year’s theme was “Thinkers, Transformers, and Troublemakers: Agents of Change.” As a member of the planning committee, Upper School Head Bill White says “the group wanted to provide attendees the opportunity to hear national experts speak on educational change occurring throughout the United States. This is a wonderful opportunity for the school to show the campus and programs off to many of the administrators and teachers that make up NWAIS. Also, we want to transform Charles Wright into the educational thought leader in the Puget Sound.”

The list of presenters speaking at the conference was quite impressive. The keynote speaker was Milton Chen, who spoke on “Edges of Innovation In Our Schools.” Mr. Chen is an innovation expert who was the former executive director of Edutopia. Edutopia’s vision is of a new world of learning based on the compelling truth that improving education is the key to the survival of the human race. Featured speaker Catherine Steiner-Adair led a session titled “Stomach Aches, Sleepless Nights, and Stressed for Success: The Spectrum of Stress and Anxiety in Children” as well as one titled “Using Technology As An Ally In Creating A Caring, Creative School Culture.” She is a research associate at the Harvard School of Psychiatry. Robert Evans, who discussed “Managing Change in Schools” and “The Changing Independent School Parent,” was another featured speaker. Mr. Evans is the executive director of the Human Relations Service in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

During the conference, several members of the CWA faculty led workshops, and two Upper School students presented a topic as well. In addition, members of the Upper School Green Key Club served as hosts and members of the choir and orchestra performed.

It has been more than a decade since Charles Wright Academy has hosted the NWAIS Fall Educators conference. “The hope is that the conference provided inspiration to all members of the faculty and staff to examine their teaching practice and inspire them to think about how they can make even minor changes that will enhance their curriculum or improve student learning,” said Mr. White. “I am in awe of everyone’s work and sincerely thankful to being a member of the CWA community. Not even a rainy and windy day could dampen the indelible spirit of everyone who attended the conference.”

Tarrier Testimonials: Ge Family On Their CWA Experience

It was with great excitement over the summer that we invited the CWA community to view a new collection of short films shining a spotlight on what makes Charles Wright Academy so special. In addition to a highlight reel showcasing the academic, artistic, and athletic programs that set CWA apart is a handful of family testimonial videos wherein Tarriers share why they made the decision to join our school family.

The second video in the testimonial series features the Ge family. The Ges are a family of four who first came to CWA in 2001, when their elder daughter Emily ’15 began junior kindergarten. Her sister, Mei ’18, joined the Tarrier family three years later. Emily is now a sophomore at Yale, and Mei is a junior in the Upper School. Here, Mei and her parents discuss their appreciation for the holistic approach to education at CWA and the character development that comes from hard work and dedication.

CWA Visual Arts Faculty to Present Work at Joint Art Show

All seven members of the Charles Wright Academy art faculty will be collaborating on a joint show to highlight their work and celebrate the visual arts with the South Sound community. The show, “Beyond the Classroom: Love It, Live It, Teach It,” will take place on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Hotel Murano in downtown Tacoma.

The show, co-sponsored with the Hotel Murano and Creative Forces Gifts & Sundries, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the lobby of Tacoma’s renowned Hotel Murano. The art faculty will be presenting work across a variety of media:

Candy Anderson – Paper sculpture
Christina Bertucchi – Painting and drawing
Nick Bivins – Ceramics
Bob Gordon – Wood Carving
Christopher Hoppin – Mixed-media sculpture
Kate Rue – Painting
Dana Squires – Painting

It’s rare for an entire department of art faculty to also be professional working artists, and it’s even more uncommon for them to band together to present work as a group. The professional and personal benefits abound. “We are excited to show with our colleagues to learn more about each other,” says Art Department Chair Christopher Hoppin. “We know each other as coworkers, teachers, and friends, but we always learn more by seeing the work everyone shows.”

Our teachers are also enthusiastic about encouraging students to create, hoping that their own continued professional work reinforces the mantra of leading by example. “Maintaining a professional practice keeps me humble, because developing new work involves a lot of failure,” says Upper School ceramics and photography teacher Nick Bivins. “It reminds me how difficult being a student can be.” Yearbook advisor Kate Rue agrees. “We are all role models and students get inspired by what we can do,” she says. “One of my favorite quotes that speaks to this is, ‘How you do anything is how you do everything.'”

All work will be for sale during the show, and select pieces will continue to be available for sale in the Creative Forces store within the Hotel Murano afterward.

In conjunction with the CWA Arts Boosters, a no-host bar and hors d’oeuvres will be available during the show as the community meets, mingles, celebrates, and supports the arts in the South Sound. We look forward to seeing Tarriers and other friends of the arts there!

Boogie Your Way to Solid Gold at Spirit Auction 2017

The Spirit Auction wouldn’t be possible without the generosity and sheer organizational power of our parent volunteers. This year’s procurement team has worked hard to make donating to the Spirit Auction that much easier—and all in the spirit of Solid Gold!

In an effort to make it easier to donate items for the silent auction, the procurement team has done the brainstorming for the rest of us by packaging items together in baskets by theme. These ideas have been laid out on a display board (affectionately referred to as the Boogie Board, seen above) in the Lower School, but all of the packages are listed in full in this Google document so that families in Middle and Upper School can get down, too!

You can choose to be a basket captain and lead a package by yourself or with a group of people. If you would like to do this, please write down your name, phone number, and email address under the package item, and we will be in contact with you.

Or, if you do not feel you can take a whole package on, please peruse the items in the Google document and email the Parent Association to let us know which individual item(s) from a basket you would like to help donate.

If you feel there are other amenities for the packages that are not listed, please email the Parent Association to share your ideas about additional items.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in your disco best at the 2017 Spirit Auction, to be held in the Tarrier Dome on Saturday, March 4!

Jump in and double your impact on Match Day! For one day only on Wednesday, November 2, the Charles Wright Academy Board of Trustees will match dollar for dollar every pledge and donation to the Fund for Charles Wright Academy (FFCWA) up to $25,000.

Volunteers will be working around the clock on Nov. 2 to reach out to the Charles Wright community—parents, guardians, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents of alumni, and friends of the school—to share stories about how making a gift to the school can have a direct and immediate impact on Tarriers’ educations this academic year—and next year, as the Board decides on the 2017-2018 operating budget while taking the current year’s FFCWA estimate into account.

Callers will start the day in the Lower School Commons, and we invite you to join us for free coffee between 7:45 and 8:30 a.m. and to learn more about Match Day. “Come in after morning drop-off, join the fun, and sip a latte on us,” says Director of Annual Giving Kerri Wilcox. “Together, we can double our dollars to support CWA in the best possible way…but we only have 24 hours so we need to act quickly! Hurry, jump on in and join other parents who have already given.”

To make a pledge to the 2016-2017 Fund for Charles Wright Academy (and pay by June 30, 2017), please click here. To make a secure online gift to this year’s FFCWA, please click here. Thank you for your support!

Takeaways from the 2016 NWAIS Fall Educators Conference

$
0
0

1,200 Electives! Agents of Change! Troublemakers and Transformers! At Charles Wright Academy, this is what the headline might read.

I passionately believe that what Charles Wright Academy does for student learning, growth, and engagement is special. The opportunities our students have to examine and explore ideas and develop critical reading, writing, and thinking skills is enriched and facilitated by their being in an outstanding and safe environment that is built on meaningful relationships with faculty and each other. What extraordinary opportunity there is at Charles Wright in encouraging robust success in educating children with outstanding faculty that position us to be the center for educational excellence in the Northwest.

All of these factors collided on October 14, when CWA hosted the NWAIS Fall Educators Conference. More than 1,200 educators from independent schools in eight states were in attendance. The conference was aptly titled: “Thinkers, Transformers, and Troublemakers: Agents of Change.” So for that day, the center of pre-K-12 education in the Northwest was on the Charles Wright campus. We were leaders that day—also by having 12 faculty and staff and two students presenting workshops in a range of topics from teaching social justice to creating a healthy environment of change and challenge. We had national speakers and authors here presenting on the “Edges of Innovation,” “Managing Change in Schools,” and “The Spectrum of Stress and Anxiety in Children.”

Not only were we at the epicenter of pre-K-12 education in the Northwest that day, but this year we are currently deep into creating a healthy school culture of thinking, transforming, and troublemaking. With intentionality and purposefulness, the faculty and staff of Charles Wright are constructing a culture that encourages disruptive thinking and moves past some of the institutionally created boundaries of our current educational model. The faculty is bursting forth with proposals for rich elective offerings, team teaching, makerspaces, virtual reality teaching, education, and more. Most of them are feeling their own power as change agents.

One of the takeaways from the conference that aligns with our opportunity here at Charles Wright is that disruptive thinking that challenges institutionalized norms and practices aligns with our values as a leading educational provider. It aligns with our belief that our work teaching children will be even better by positioning ourselves as teachers of teachers. It aligns with our intent to become the educational thought leader for pre-K-12 education in the Pacific Northwest. It aligns with our belief that our great program of education is ready to flourish.

Even as we embrace our traditions of excellence, participation, and engagement, we sit on the cusp of opportunity to challenge our own status quo—to the end of making the learning experience of our students even more exceptional. Arguably we all have the duty to instigate, investigate, and pursue possibilities of change that will positively affect the learning experience of our students. This is an exciting time in the life of the academy and our students and faculty.

Upper School Japanese teacher Stephanie Glenn ’86 shares highlights of a visit from Tomoka Ishigaki, a graduate of our sister Mukogawa School (learn more here) who is assistant teaching at CWA for a couple of weeks.

“Tomoka is a graduate of Mukogawa. She was a spring exchange student at CWA 13 years ago and now is a pharmacist in Japan currently in between jobs. She is living with me and my family and acting as a TA for my classes here for two weeks. We are having lots of fun interviewing her, cooking, playing games, and chatting in Japanese. This week she will teach brush calligraphy and we will do tea ceremonies.”

Below is a video of the Japanese 400 students playing a traditional card game called karuta (カルタ) with Tomoka.

Statement of Support for All Tarriers Post-Election

$

0

Members of the CWA faculty and staff shared a statement of support for all Tarriers at the Upper School student assembly this morning.

We know that many of you are feeling uncertain and anxious in this post-election climate. From those of us standing here today and many others: We hear you, we care about you, and we want to know how we can support you, even if it’s only a matter of listening or providing space for you to talk. And to encourage conversation and compassion, we’d like to provide some thoughts about how we can all be actively compassionate toward each other in the coming months and years, both within the CWA community and beyond:

1) When we disagree, we engage each other with respect and care.

2) When a member of our community expresses concerns about their personal safety, their dignity, their rights, or those of their family or community, we listen and offer support. We don’t dismiss or trivialize each other’s experiences.

3) We reject bigotry and dehumanizing language and behavior, and when we see these directed at someone, we speak up.

4) We look out for each other and are aware that when we have privilege in some areas, we can step in to support those who are particularly vulnerable.

These are only meant to be a jumping-off point for discussion. Please come and talk to us, talk to each other, keep being the bright and caring people that we’ve all seen you be over the years. Thank you.

Wright Angle Robotics Co-Coach Jim Albers shares an update on the first robotics competition of the year!

On Saturday our CWA MS/US robotics team (#6427) competed in its first competition at Bellarmine Prep. Twelve teams competed in a 15-match competition.

CWA ended the day winning all of our five matches and taking first place overall in the competition. It was a great start to the new season! It was also rewarding for the students to see all of their ideas, work, and effort come to fruition for this first event, as there was a great deal of uncertainty and worry about whether the robot would do what they had assembled and programmed. Although there is still lots to do and modify, the day was a success!
