Athletic Results 1/22-1/26

Boys Basketball

1/23 Vs Vashon (W, 48-44) The Tarriers secured their first win over the Vashon Island Pirates since the 2011-12 season. After Senior scoring leader Henry Lenaburg went down in the first quarter, Sophomore point guard Dane Jacobson took over finishing with 16 points. Two other seniors: Noah Fields and Hayden Saalfeld stepped up as well finishing with 12 and 9 points as well as cleaning up the defensive boards.
1/26 Vs Cascade Christian (L, 59-41). On Senior Night, the Tarriers battled with the Cougars through out the game before falling to a barrage of three pointers late in the 3rd quarter. Charles Wright was led by Senior Hayden Saalfeld who finished with 13 points.
Girls Basketball

On Tuesday, January 23 the girls began the second half of Nisqually league play at home against the Vashon Pirates. Having defeated the Pirates earlier in the month, the Tarrier girls were ready to get back to their winning ways once again.

While the game started slowly for both teams in the first, the action started to heat up in the second quarter. This quarter would see RubyJoy Pikes go 6/6 from the free throw line as she continued to battle in the paint to get points. The Tarriers took a 20-12 lead into half time.
With the lead in hand, the team wanted to widen the gap between themselves and the Pirates. These ladies continued to work hard looking in to find great interior shots. Heading toward the final quarter, the Tarriers had a 32-20 lead.
By the end of the fourth quarter the Pirates had caught up to make it close, but Grace Hanly would tack on 3 points through the 8 minutes to keep the Tarriers just enough ahead to keep the win, 35-30.
RubyJoy led the trio of scorers with 21 points. Grace chipped in 9 points, and Julia Hanly rounds out the group with 5.
After the Varsity game the JV girls came out. When they played at Vashon they kept things close, only losing by 3 points. These girls were determined to prove to themselves that they can do great things!
With plenty of quarters for all of the players to use, this team was unstoppable! They were patient, they looked up, they found one another. They battled for rebounds and got some put backs. Their defense was solid and they found cracks to get a great number of steals! Once they had the lead, there was no turning back! They would end the night beating the Pirates 36-18!
Brenna Sclair continued to be a great strength for the JV girls leading the squad with 18 points. Taiya Melsness had one of her best nights scoring 10 points throughout. Alyssa Recasner dished out multiple assists and also scored 6 points. Rounding out the total was Cindy Li with 2 points.

On Friday, January 26th the Tarriers played in their final home game of the season facing off against the Cascade Christian Cougars. Prior to the game we honored our four graduating seniors, manager Elle Rowe, and players Cindy Li, Bert Brown and Grace Hanly. With a packed crowd the girls hoped to use the energy to redeem themselves from the loss to the Cougars earlier in the season.

The first quarter started slow for the Tarriers, but saw Grace Hanly put down two three pointers. The Cougars managed to take a six point lead after the first eight minutes of play. The defense began to pick up speed in the second quarter, and then the girls started to find their rhythm. With a buzzer beating three from Julia Hanly, the Tarriers went into the locker room with a 20-17 lead.
After a pleasing halftime show from the Lower School Jump Rope team, the girls looked to keep the momentum going and to seal up the win. The game stayed close, and a saw just a few more small lead changes, but the points from Lexi Leith and the hot hand of RubyJoy Pikes helped to keep the game going their way. With just 90 seconds to go the Tarriers had a 4 point lead. In the final 30 seconds fouls were being traded back and forth, and the girls were able to add in an additional 4 points over the Cougars 2 to close out the game. The Tarriers won 36-30 improving to 3-3 in league.
Grace Hanly led all scorers with 14 points. Other Tarrier scorers included RubyJoy Pikes (10), Julia Hanly (5), Lexi Leith (6) and Bert Brown (1).
Following the excitement of the Varsity game the JV girls took to the court for their final game of the season. Always playing with a limited bench, these ladies worked hard all season. The Tarriers would play from behind all game, but still would never give up. They focused their energy toward having fun, battling for rebounds, and doing what they know best.
Sophomore Taiya Melsness led the JV squad with 14 points this game. Junior Brenna Sclair and freshman Alyssa Recasner each added in 4 points. Despite losing 22-39, these girls gave it their all. Even though their season is done, they will continue to work hard to help the Varsity girls as they make a post-season push.
